Experience Summary                                         

 Mr. Nehr has more than 34 years experience over a wide range of photographic and engineering disciplines. He is an internationally published photographer, with substantial credentials in the area of aerospace imaging, as well as in the fields of advertising and general commercial imaging. He also has experience in photo-engineering and has been responsible for designing cameras and control systems used to achieve unique images of missile and rocket launches. Mr. Nehr is a former commercial studio president and owner and is well versed in matters of scheduling, customer relations and quality control / assurance. He was the senior photographer / videographer for McDonnell Douglas Astronautics for 4 1/2 years. He has over 10 years experience working on the KSC/ Cape Canaveral Base as a Photographer and Instrumentation Camera Specialist. He has been formally trained in high speed motion analysis using film and video systems and in engineering data reduction. In addition, Mr. Nehr is a qualified camera installation and repair technician as well as a formally trained machinist / tool and die maker. The latter qualification assists him in supervising the design and fabrication of equipment needed to complete video and still imaging contracts as well as in the design and construction of custom equipment for meeting the unique challenges of test range imaging. 

 May 2007-Present  Senior Instrumentation Specialist / Imaging systems designer.

Responsible for designing imaging systems and support equipment.  Responsible for data gathering and test report writing on topics such as Lens Vibration and image stability issues.  Researches and writes white papers and test reports on optical system and mechanical system issues. Presents to senior management and contract vendors. Proposes design modifications and oversees implementation. 

July 2004 – May 2007; Shuttle program-BCI planner / Senior Instrumentation Camera Technician. Indyne Inc, KICS contract Kennedy Space Center Florida.

 

 Responsible for planning, equipment specification, integration, and project execution of the shuttle thermal protection system, baseline imaging project. Led a six person team in this effort. This is a flow-critical mapping project that results in digital mapping of the TPS (Thermal Protection System)  surfaces using Pro SLR N (14MP) cameras and 4x5 Scanning back cameras. These images are required for return to flight of the STS system. Planning began in August 2004, equipment test and integration in October 2004, and execution in February, 2005. This project delivers to the program level a concise data package for computerized comparison to images downloaded from the orbiting vehicle and the ISS platform. Planning required active participation in engineering meetings, designing and submitting a detailed imaging plan, presenting to BCI, IPWG and program level engineering groups. This project is the first flow-critical photography project ever in the STS program.  In addition to this project, responsibilities include planning and leading high speed video and film data gathering for other return to flight tests,. such as frangible nut testing and vent line drop tests. Active participation in engineering reviews and engineering management planning meetings was also required. Other responsibilities have included participation in design review meetings for the range optics upgrade program for tracking lenses. Participated in the design team specifying 400” optics for KTM tracking mounts.  Also serves as a tracking mount operator during critical launch operations.

 

 April 2004- July 2004 ; Instrumentation Camera Technician,  Planner, Johnson Controls World Services VITC, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. 

Assisted in planning shuttle return to flight imaging  designed and fabricated support instruments used in support of shuttle and expendable launch vehicles. Completed high speed film and still equipment certification and maintenance. The VITC contract  became the KICS contract, and was won by Indyne. KICS began in July 2004.  

March 1999 – March 2004;  Senior Photographer, Photographic Engineer, Bionetics Photo Services, Cape Canaveral Fl.  

Managed personnel responsible for the production of still and motion media images for both launch related and general commercial customers. Served as client point of contact for incoming commercial work. Coordinated imaging needs with engineering departments both internal and in the customers organization. Served on operating, planning and proposal teams. Experienced in proposal writing. 

 Specified and coordinated purchase of equipment needed to meet technical specifications set forth in the customers statement of work. Responsible for design of camera and lighting enclosures used in the launch environment. Responsible for lighting configuration and setting of 45 million candela luminaries for night launches. Responsible for ensuring compliance with NEMA  /  NFPA electrical codes in explosive and hazardous environments.  Also served as senior photographer on selected assignments. Experienced in high speed video data acquisition, video system installation, and production video camera operation and editing. Experienced with Phantom 5,7,9 high speed video and DVC pro broadcast video equipment.

 Also experienced with Betacam SP and Hitachi D5 and D10 video cameras.  This position was eliminated due to the company concentrating its workforce allocation in business ventures not related to aerospace.  

March 1995- August 1998   Bionetics RVITS Instrumentation Camera Specialist / Photographer

August 1998 – March 1999 Johnson Controls  VITC  Instrumentation Camera Specialist / Photographer                                           

Installed, repaired, and operated a wide variety of imaging equipment used on the Eastern Test Range. Familiar with normal and high-speed instrumentation equipment, both film and video. Qualified to repair all equipment currently in use including Photosonics, Mitchell and Hulcher camera systems.  Experienced with pad wiring, installation and maintenance of protective housings on all complexes.  Familiar with POCS and Air Force sequencer interfaces. Photographic skills were used extensively to produce motion and still images for both commercial and government customers as well as for use in corporate marketing material. Was further utilized as a lab technician in the still image lab. Resigned to accept the position with Bionetics Photo Services above. .                                                                                                                                                                                          – August 1988 – May 1993 Senior Photographer / Videographer, McDonnell Douglas Missile Systems 

Served as principal image producer of engineering and advertising images on several missile programs.    Responsibilities included range layout, sequencer design, data analysis and reduction, as well as processing of the finished data.  Was responsible for solving several engineering problems involving flight anomalies using high speed motion analysis techniques. Received bonuses, numerous awards and promotions for these efforts. Wrote, produced, directed and edited many corporate video presentations on ¾” u-matic format. Was extensively crossed utilized to the engineering directorate with responsibilities in design and prototyping of composite and mechanical structures.  

The Florida operation was closed due to loss of key contracts in 1994; support functions at McDonnell Douglas / Florida, including the photo department, closed in 1993. Separation was due to this closure. 

-December 1979- March 1988 President / owner/ Senior Photographer, Adam Photographic Illustrations                                              

Owned and operated a 5,000 sq. ft, six employee commercial photography studio in Erie Pennsylvania.  Produced images for corporate and advertising clients.  Personally shot over 100 magazine covers and over 1000 nationally placed advertisements for major corporations and agencies. Also operated a full service color lab from this location . The operation was profitable from 1980 on, with growth of 28% per annum. Sold the Pennsylvania operation in March 1988,  acquired a Florida business license and retained equipment to support  personal, and freelance work primarily in the area of fine art photography.

-Experienced electrician with broad knowledge of NFPA electrical code with concentration on section 496 and 500 special occupancies including C1 Div 2 atmospheres.

 Numerous awards including McDonnell Douglas “Best of 90” Award for performance well above expectations on imaging and data reduction involving several major missile programs.  Also of note, the NASA Spirit Of Excellence award for photographic support of the payload processing operations in The O&C building. 

   Photographic Accomplishments:- 

Ø             48 pieces of fine art work in Black and White held in permanent collection of the International Photographers Hall of Fame (IPHF), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Ø             Invented and manufactured the PadCam imaging system in use at Cape Canaveral and Kennedy space center. This integrated system of IC based controllers, coupled with custom built 4x5 cameras and hardened cases for standard roll-film cameras, is used for launch imaging.

Ø             Florida artist of the month (Upcoming) for December 2005, Orlando Museum of Art Founders Gallery. 28 piece one man exhibit.

Ø       Awarded ACES young businessman of the year, Pennsylvania, 1974

Ø       Reengineered and rebuilt Rutan VariViggen Aircraft featured in Feb 1992 Air  Progress magazine article (5  pages). 1000 hour pilot, aerobatic qualified

Ø       Designed and built Head Up Display for above aircraft using unique reverse polarity LCD display .

Ø       Designed, engineered and fabricated fiberglass replica ACES 2 ejection seat for use in McDonnell Douglas simulators  from 1991 to 1996 This project  required re-assignment to the engineering directorate for three months and was supervised by Roger Hickman and Jack Walker, Director of Developmental Engineering.  Letter of commendation on file for this effort.

Ø       Awarded InDyne Teamwork award 2006 and 2007

Ø       Awarded NASA QASAR award for stress and failure analysis  of safety tethers used center wide at Kennedy Space Center and also used on the imaging contract.
