Detroit
Company plans to build One Million Square Feet in Public Buildings in
South East Michigan connected by new high speed rail technology known as
Magnetic Levitation
As
the largest single construction project in Michigan's history, the
Interstate Traveler Company of Detroit announces more details on the
plan to network the Detroit Metro Area with state of the art magnetic
levitation (MagLev) rail systems and served by one hundred new Traveler
Stations.
This new industrial model will revolutionize public infrastructure and create millions of jobs over the next 20 years.
Rarely do we see in
America the bold moves to build grand public projects like was seen 100
years ago in the hay-day of public transit. In the early 1900’s America
saw the rise of many great public buildings like the Grand Central
Station and Penn Station in New York. Every great city in America seems
to have built a giant train station during those glory days. But these
days many of those great public buildings have been abandoned or town
down. The Interstate Traveler Company of Detroit has built itself up
around those bold ideas with state of the art magnetic levitation high
speed rail technology at its center.
Company officials have
been working internationally for years to raise awareness of their state
of the art high speed rail technology, yet home is where the heart is.
While attending a recent local gathering near Heart Plaza in the center
of Detroit, conversation turned toward the impressive jobs creation
numbers and the great volume of new public space that will be built to
serve their first major installation of their rail technology they call
“The Alpha System” which has been mapped out to include about 90 miles
of highway connecting Detroit with Ann Arbor. Having to two large loops
in Detroit and a complete loop all the way around the City of Ann Arbor
the maps show the rail passing 42 highway interchanges. According to
their plans each highway interchange will have two large Traveler
Stations for public access. This means they plan to build 84 Traveler
Stations to provide access to the system for people traveling along the
rail. When asked about where all 100 proposed Traveler Stations would
be constructed, officers from the company pointed out the need to
integrate with hospitals, universities, public venues and air ports on
the route which will quickly account for an additional 16 Traveler
Stations.
According to the Founder Mr. Justin Sutton, the 'Alpha
System' has been designed from step one to optimize the Interstate
Highway rights of way with a primary focus on maximum access for the
people along the route. "We will build a pair of Traveler Stations at
every highway interchange between Detroit and Ann Arbor to insure that
all people along the route will have equal access to the benefits of our
system". Sutton went on to compare the Interstate Traveler Alpha
System with some other local small scale light rail proposals that are
demanding a tax subsidy and only plan for 5 train stations. Compared to
the proposed 100 Traveler Stations and no tax payer subsidies, it seems
the Alpha System wins hands down. "This new industrial model will
revolutionize public infrastructure and create millions of jobs over the
next twenty years." Sutton said and based on the material published on
their website it is tough to argue with the numbers.
"Public
transportation systems in cities all over the world have often made the
mistake of building stations for trains instead of stations for people."
said CEO Mr. Jim Jung, "In this day and age we all need to recognize
the need for great public spaces in grand fashion and in a scale
befitting of a big city. For Public Transit to be a success you have to
make room for lots of people." The conversation with Jung was full of
surprises as he made point after point about the necessity to focus on
People and how best to serve large numbers of Travelers and make sure
that the general public has immediate access to the Traveler Stations
and a host of services that you would find at the finest air ports
around the world. “People want quality and a positive experience and
easy access, and most of all 24 hour service.” Jung continued “We are a
Detroit based company that has made this our central mission.”
How
can this start-up company expect to build 100 buildings that are 10,000
square feet or bigger and build nearly 100 miles of state of the art
magnetic levitation rail systems? The Chairman of the Board Mr. Jay
Wilber was more than happy to answer this question. “Our core
leadership teams are all automotive production specialists, we like to
say that here in Detroit we are a culture of innovators the make
machines that mass produce more machines. The logistics of the Alpha
System are challenging to say the least, but Detroit has the greatest
concentration of Engineers in North America and some of the best
companies in the world that specialize in factory automation. We can
and will do this when we finally nail down an equitable Public Private
Partnership with the State of Michigan.” Few people know the Detroit
automotive scene as well as Mr. Wilber. His first start with GM in
Flint began before he was 18 years of age. After 41 years of service at
General Motors, Wilber can look back at a career that includes more
than 20 years in labor relations, human resources and as a key
negotiator with the UAW. Perhaps the most famous of his accomplishments
is the publication of “United We Stand” with co-author Thomas Weekly of
the UAW. Industry insiders all recognize this volume as the go-to book
on how GM and UAW functioned together to build the best cars in the
world. Wilber retired from GM in 2005 as the Executive Director of the
UAW / GM Human Resources Center in down town Detroit and now he looks
forward to a new industrial revolution for sustainable public
infrastructure technology exported from Detroit.
The board member
in charge of developing the construction management division of the
company is Mr. Robert Meske. Mr. Meske has decades of experience
building state of the art commercial buildings working years in the city
of Ann Arbor on many of the audacious and world leading architecture
projects undertaken by the University of Michigan. With nineteen years
experience as a public servant and Owner's Representative for the
University of Michigan participating in a several one (1) billion dollar
construction campaigns involving Health Care and Medical Research
projects and Central Campus projects, Mr. Meske is no stranger to
responsibility for billions of dollars worth of construction activity.
“There is nothing easy or simple about construction management” said
Meske “My job is to assemble and manage our library of contracts and
make sure we exceed all standards for safety and process management
during the many stages of construction.” Meske continued to describe
the exciting challenge ahead for him as he talked about how exiting it
will be to witness the simultaneous construction of 100 building in the
Detroit metro area. With a million square feet of combined public space
in all our Traveler Stations added to the space provide in the 300
public transit vehicles on the system the company says they project the
total occupancy potential could be more than 250,000 people moving about
in our system.
So the looming question is: When will this ground
breaking company actually be permitted to break actual ground? This
quickly the determination of the Founder who launched the initiative in
2002 and by mid 2003 had already won the full support of the Michigan
AFL-CIO, District 2 of the United Steel Workers of America, twelve of
the fourteen metropolitan councils of government in the State of
Michigan and the official Unanimous Resolutions of support from the
House and Senate of the State of Michigan. He went on to explain how
the State Resolutions represent a stake in the ground that says: “Here
We Begin Anew” with the entire elected legislature of the State of
Michigan signing their names to the Resolutions and are witness that
fact that Michigan is the first State in the Union to Resolve to Build a
State and Nationwide sustainable infrastructure smart grid integrated
with modern and efficient magnetic levitation rail technology. When
considering the work that has been done by this company in their home
state and abroad it becomes clear that there has been a political
problem to make progress since 2003. Yet the officers of this company
continue to keep their pencils sharp for when the political situation is
finally resolved so that work can begin.
After a recent
presentation to the official Green Task Force of the Detroit City
Council on the 23rd of June, one city council official was heard saying
“We Need This”. The official chose to remain anonymous but made it
clear that a bold vision is what Detroit needs now more than ever.
